Some, maybe, helpful info about the site
History
The idea of this site came a few years back when I was creating a dance list to one of our events. I saw the need to have alternative dances to our higher classes dances for the lower or beginner classes. I thought that it can’t just be me sitting with this problem every time I should create a dance list.
So, how to do it?
I sent a question to the Copperknob web master asking for some guidance and got some info back.
That was in late 2023.
Since then I have been gathering data about the dances and the music attached. I’ve no music or scripts stored on this site, only links to the scripts. This is due to copyright issues.
For now, I’m developing the pages regarding to the opinions that comes forward and when I think it has to be more simple. Maybe some clicks to much or the presentation order, hidden/displayed sections and so on.
The different pages
Search dances
On this page you enter either dance title, the choreographer or details on the build-up of the dance. Just remember to include the build-up attribute section, if needed. You can also display the music connected. For now, only one song can be displayed for each dance.
Search music
Here you can enter music title, artist or attributes of the music. At least one of those fields must be entered. Just remember to include the attribute section, if wanted, into the search. Also the connected dance/dances can be displayed. If ”No dances linked” is shown, it means that there’s no dance directly linked to the song. However the song can be alternative music to a dance.
There’s some abbrevations in data, Strgt stands for Straight on (No Tags or Restarts). If there are tags and/or restarts it’s a Y and/or N respectivly. It’s Yes or No.
Display registered alternative dances
Display the already connected alternative dance/s to the main dance. Give main dance as search condition. This search differs from the below search page because this search is supposed to contain already tried alternatives. Sometimes it may be some connection error while loading the alternatives from an external source.
You HAVE to check for yourself if you think it works.
Search alternative dance
Search for alternative dances due to the music attached to the given dance. Any registered alternative dance connected to the music is excluded. Likewise the dances choreographed to the original music.
The result is only suggestions. You HAVE to check that it works.
Search alternative music
The search for alternative music is linked to alternative dances and their music in the first part of the results. Registered alternative music without a linked dance is also included here.
The second part is for the non-linked music via alternative dance or music. It is music with the same music type and within +-5 BPM of the original music for the dance specified in the search.
An asterisk(*) can be typed in as a wildcard. That means that on that position there can be none to many characters.
Tags and/or restarts are included in the search, but not how many or where they are.
As always, try the music. It may or may not work.
Instructors Choice
On this page you can search for musictype, speed, dance level and count in the dance. One of these fields must be filled in.
The choreographers resident location, due to Copperknob, can be selected. None, one or more continent can be choosen.
In the attribute section there’s some choises you can do. Standard search attributes are No Tags/Restarts and Phrased No.
On the result page you can use the search function to select within the result.
Some other stuff
Similar searches can be performed on Copperknob website. I’ve no intention of competing with Copperknob,
just helping instructors and DJ: s, maybe, with their work.
When searching for dances, the length (count) of the dance may not be the same as the phrase of the music
For example: The choreographer may have choosen to make a 64-count dance on a 32 phrased song. The dance may have a restart at 32 count on any wall, so there’s no restart in the music though in the dance.
I’ve also seen different interpretations of tags respectivly restarts. You can have a tag on 16 count, or you can have a restart of the dance to the same song. And, of course, combos of those two.
The field ”music type” is a mix between type of dance and music genre. I’ve done so because the dancing isn’t dependent on music genre. But, with that said, if the music can be used for different types of dance character, I’ve registered the music genre. (According to my veiw)
BPM is a measure of speed, and it stands for Beats Per Minute in this case. Another interpretation is Bars Per Minute and that says whole 4/4 beats per unit in 4/4 build. In 3/4 it’s 3 beats per unit. In Latin and Ballroom competition it’s more common to use Bars Per Minute to describe the speed.
Webmaster
Me, the creator of this site, is:
Håkan Westerberg in Örebro, Sweden.
Linedancing since 2001.
I’ve had some great help from collegue instructors from Sweden. And I hope to have in the future too. If you have dancing lists with alternatives from 2022 and later and are willing to share, mail me at requestupdate.
If you want some more function or modified such, mail to webmaster.
If you want to have an update on something regarding dance, music or alternatives, mail to requestupdate.
I cannot change anything within the scripts, just the metadata of the dance. It can be changes in the metadata after I’ve registered the dance in the database. Please notify me if you discover something strange about the metadata.
